What is EDI?

Equality

Equality is about creating a society that is fair and allows everyone to fulfil their potential. This means removing barriers and taking action to eliminate discrimination that prevent some groups from participating and achieving.

Equality is characterised by fair and equal access, participation, opportunities and outcomes.

Equality means ‘equality’ between individuals.

Diversity

Diversity is a term that can be used to holistically define the backgrounds of all stakeholders of an organisation through their similarities and differences.

Diversity is a concept that also relates to the culture of an organisation in that it implies that policies, practices and accepted attitudes acknowledge, respect and reflect difference.

Diversity is about recognising and valuing difference in it’s broadest sense (NHS employers 2010)

Inclusion

An approach where groups or individuals with different backgrounds are welcomed, culturally and socially accepted, and treated equally. Engaging with each person as an individual.

This definition comes from University of Bath, but here at CPFT we'd love to know what you think we should consider in how we define and approach inclusion. You can contact us to share your views, or engage in the Compassion in Action programme to be part of the conversation.
